harlie Hill leads a double life! And both of them as an artist. Indiana-born Hill, who works digitally in the nostalgic and radiant “heroic” vein, is also mixed up in the movie biz. His strong, idealistic figures enriched by a vibrant palette and dramatic lighting—of hardworking men and beautiful women in a Machine Age milieu that’s been cyber-spun—morph into humorous, bouncy little characters in “Trailers from Hell”, a website ode to horror-movie trailers where his art is cleverly animated (trailersfromhell.com). These humorous guys work the flip side of his print portfolio, too. With a BFA from John Herron School of Art, MFA from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and one-man and group fine art shows that continue, Hill (born Charlie Largent) moved from art directing at an Indianapolis NBC affiliate in the ‘70s to video and film production in the ‘80s that included the official music video for that city, and production design for feature film, “The Escapist”. The illustration career went full-tilt in the late ‘90s and includes clients Coca Cola, Microsoft, and A&E Network, followed by his move to California. Since then, Hill has deftly managed his two-tiered career, initially as a film reviewer for “Video Watchdog”, then with the sale of an original story, “Tagged”, to UPN for “The Twilight Zone” hosted by Forest Whitaker, followed by co-writing an original screenplay about legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, “The Man with Kaleidoscope Eyes”, to be directed by Joe Dante. Another screenplay is in the works, along with a book about Corman's films. Hill resides in Los Angeles (of course). |
